A young boy named Jack lived with his mother. They were so poor that one day, his mother told him to sell their only cow. On the way, Jack met a man who offered to trade the cow for five "magic" beans. Jack accepted, but when he came home, his mother was furious and threw the beans out the window. The next morning, Jack saw a gigantic beanstalk had grown into the clouds. He decided to climb it. At the top, he found a huge castle belonging to a fearsome giant. While the giant was sleeping, Jack quickly stole a bag of gold coins and scrambled back down the beanstalk. The gold helped them for a while, but soon it was gone. So Jack climbed the beanstalk again. This time, he stole a hen that laid golden eggs. The giant woke up and chased him, but Jack was fast and made it down safely. Still not satisfied, Jack climbed the beanstalk a third time. He found a magical golden harp that played beautiful music by itself. As he took the harp, it cried out, "Master!" The giant woke up and roared with anger, chasing Jack down the beanstalk. Jack scrambled down as fast as he could, yelling, "Mother, bring the axe!" His mother rushed out with an axe, and Jack chopped down the beanstalk. The giant came crashing down and was never seen again. Jack and his mother lived happily ever after with their new treasures.
