His small paws scrubbed and dusted and swept, his nose twitching in irritation as dust motes danced in the air. His cozy burrow felt suddenly stuffy, closed, and full of chores. At last, he dropped his brush. “Hang spring cleaning!” he declared — and before he knew it, he was scrambling upward, up through the damp earth toward the light. He blinked as he broke through the surface. The world above gleamed with life — the smell of grass, the sound of birds, the sun so warm it made his fur shimmer. Mole stood still, his brown tweed jacket slightly askew, his green trousers brushed with soil, eyes wide with awe. He laughed softly, almost shyly. Everything was so bright, so alive.
