The Wizard of Oz (Dorothy) Dorothy lives on a gray Kansas farm with her Aunt Em, Uncle Henry, and a little dog named Toto. When a swirling cyclone hits, Dorothy and Toto are carried away in their small house and dropped into the colorful land of Oz. The house lands on the Wicked Witch of the East, freeing the Munchkins and earning Dorothy a pair of magical silver shoes. Longing to return home, she is told to follow the Yellow Brick Road to the Emerald City and ask the Wizard of Oz for help. Along the road she meets a Scarecrow who wants a brain, a Tin Woodman who longs for a heart, and a Cowardly Lion who wishes for courage. They become friends and travel together, facing dark forests, enchanted poppy fields, and flying monkeys. The Wizard agrees to grant their wishes if they defeat the Wicked Witch of the West. In the Witch’s gloomy castle, Dorothy is forced to work, but when the Witch tries to take her shoes, Dorothy throws a bucket of water in anger, and the Witch melts away. Back in the Emerald City, the friends discover the Wizard is just an ordinary man using tricks. Still, he helps the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and Lion see that they already possess what they desire. Finally, Dorothy learns from Glinda the Good Witch that the shoes can take her home if she clicks her heels together and wishes hard enough. She does so and wakes up back in Kansas, hugging Toto and telling her family there is no place like home.
