It was a chilly winter evening. Steam floated from the pot, and the kitchen smelled of warm dough. Little Tim watched as his grandma kneaded a soft ball of dough on the wooden table. Grandma: “Dumplings are traditional. We wrap meat or veggies in dough and boil them.” First, they rolled the dough into long ropes, then cut them into small pieces. Tim watched closely as his grandma flattened each piece into a thin round wrapper. Next, she spooned a little meat and cabbage mixture into the center. Tim: “Can I try?” Tim carefully pinched the edges of his dumpling, making it look like a tiny treasure. Grandma showed him the “crescent fold” and he tried it, sometimes squishing the filling out. Soon, the table was full of neat dumplings, each one different. Grandma: “Perfect! Now we boil them until they float.” Steam rose as the dumplings cooked, filling the kitchen with a delicious aroma. When the timer dinged, Grandma drained the dumplings into a big plate. Tim’s eyes widened. Tim: “Yum! Homemade dumplings are the best!” He eagerly grabbed one after another, and soon the plate was empty. Tim leaned back, full and happy, while the warm kitchen glowed around him.
