An empire marched toward Greece with an army so large it darkened the horizon. Thousands upon thousands of soldiers moved as one, confident that nothing could stop them. Waiting for them at a narrow mountain pass stood only three hundred Spartan warriors. They were outnumbered beyond reason. They knew they would not survive. Retreat was possible. Surrender was offered. They refused both. The Spartans chose the narrow pass so the enemy’s numbers would not matter. Shield to shield, they held the line day after day. Every step forward by the enemy was paid for in blood. When their weapons broke, they fought with their hands. When their hands failed, they fought with their bodies.
